Kayak Among the Harbor Seals

Explore Tacoma’s waterfront on a relaxed guided e-bike adventure through Point Ruston, Ruston Way, and Point Defiance Park. This private experience blends scenic shoreline riding with stories of Tacoma’s industrial past, environmental transformation, and cultural history. Along the way, enjoy views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier while stopping at places like Chinese Reconciliation Park, Dune Peninsula, and Owen Beach.

Designed for small private groups, the ride moves at a comfortable pace with frequent stops for photos, narration, and exploration. Riders ages 16+ will use e-bikes, while younger guests are welcome on standard pedal bikes. Child carriers can also be attached to pedal bikes for families with small children.

The guided portion ends near Owen Beach, where guests may continue exploring Point Defiance or ride back along the waterfront at their own pace.

Itinerary

1. Welcome & Safety Briefing

   Meet your guide at the Poulsbo waterfront for check-in and an introduction to the experience. Guests will receive a kayaking safety briefing, paddle instruction, and an overview of the route before getting fitted with life jackets.

   Launch & Liberty Bay Exploration

   After launching from the waterfront, begin paddling through the calm waters of Liberty Bay in stable sit-on-top kayaks. Along the route, your guide will share stories about Poulsbo’s maritime heritage, Scandinavian roots, and the Indigenous communities who stewarded these waters for generations.

   Natural History & Wildlife Viewing

   As you move deeper into the bay, learn about the marine ecosystem of Puget Sound and Liberty Bay’s importance as a harbor seal habitat and pupping ground. Keep watch for harbor seals surfacing nearby, as well as bald eagles, great blue herons, jellyfish, and other wildlife.

   Return Paddle & Local Recommendations

   Return to the Poulsbo waterfront at a relaxed pace while your guide shares recommendations for local breweries, bakeries, coffee shops, parks, and additional ways to explore the Kitsap Peninsula after your tour.

The route follows one of the most scenic stretches of waterfront in the Puget Sound region, offering views of Mount Rainier, passing marinas and shoreline parks, and access to some of Tacoma’s most iconic public spaces.

Unlike large group tours, each ride is private and tailored to your group. Families, couples, solo travelers, and small groups can enjoy a flexible experience that balances storytelling, sightseeing, and light outdoor adventure.

E-bikes are provided for riders ages 16+, while younger participants may ride standard pedal bikes. Families with small children may also request child carriers attached to pedal bikes. Led by a local expert, this tour blends outdoor recreation with engaging storytelling and local insight.

What to Bring

Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled start time at Wheel Fun Rentals in Point Ruston to allow time for bike setup, helmet fitting, and a brief safety overview. Your guide will meet you near the rental area before the ride begins.

E-bikes are available for riders ages 16+. Guests under 16 will be provided with standard pedal bikes in accordance with local guidelines and rental policies. Families with small children may request child carriers attached to pedal bikes.

Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended. Tours operate rain or shine, so please dress appropriately for Tacoma waterfront weather.
